This research has been carried out to look at the role of the girl child in both low and high income settings in Kenya. The research goals were to recognize the girl child roles in low income and high income settings, to identify and describe the parental views of the girl child, to survey, perceptions of the girl child in relation to her role and also to examine boys perceptions of their sisters’ roles within the family.
Data was gathered by means of questionnaire schedules for parents, interviews with the children, children drawings of smileys and trees, personal observation through video recordings. This data was later on coded and examined using descriptive statistics and content analysis.
The study outcomes demonstrated that the girl child is marginalized particularly in the low-income settings. Parental expectations haven’t improved in tandem with the changes in the world. The girl child socialization is significantly affected by cultural and traditional practices. She’s prone to marry early, still tied down by domestic tasks for example fetching firewood and water, cooking and gardening. In low-income locations the girl child hasn’t been provided sufficient chance to go to school. The parents have poor expectations about her, for instance she’s more likely to drop out of school or that it’s a waste of resources for she will take everything with her when she goes along with her spouse. In addition the parents would rather educate their sons than their daughters. In terms of socialization, girls continue to be viewed as weak and their brothers are socialized to treat them as such….
