Organizing for Exploration at a High Tech Firm

Innovation is increasingly acknowledged as a significant driver for organizational performance. While the majority of well-known firms are proficient in improving their stream of rents on the current competences, they in some way appear to have difficulties with regards to the exploration of radically new opportunities. Almost a year ago, top management of Trion Kromhout, a physical amalgamation of various distinct subsidiaries of Trion N.V., began to realize the difficulties, but in addition the need for exploration (i.e. experimenting with new opportunities) within their own organization. Considering that the factors that can adversely impact exploration often grow within an organization and can be deeply rooted in its strategy, processes and structure, a detailed case study is carried out to resolve the following central research question: “How has Trion Kromhout evolved over time with respect to exploration, and just how can Trion Kromhout boost exploration?” The purpose of this project is to determine particular factors that adversely influence exploration at Trion Kromhout. The outcomes of twelve open ended interviews with several top and middle managers, desk research and the collection of narratives led to an in depth, retrospective case description of Trion in both its beginning to create a contextual view, ….
