A sonar contains an array of transducers which transmit and receive ultrasonic waves. In order to design an efficient transducer, it is very important to know the acoustic parameters of the materials used in it. This technical report describes a method of measuring absorption and velocity for shear and longitudinal waves in thin plates. A measurement system capable of collecting data for transmission losses of waves penetrating thin plates at various angles was constructed and used to collect data. This data was compared with a theoretical model for the transmission losses, and a method to extract the parameters by means of curve-fitting was utilized. Comparison with tabulated data for acryl proved that this method yields accurate results.
