Damage level calculation in SMC composite structures

Due to design and weight properties the automotive industry increasingly substitutes ordinary sheet metal with polymer products where one of these new materials is sheet molding compound (SMC). Therefore is an interest from the industry to do Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on these products.

The goal was to create a program in Matlab that calculates the damage level in a tailgate during an open-close case. One solution to that problem is to use a linear material model in the FEA program, write a program that transfers the results from linear to nonlinear within a certain margin, calculate the damage level, and then postprocess the results.
