Fitness of the transgenic malaria-refractory mosquito Anopheles gambiae

The African mosquito Anopheles gambiae is the insect vector responsible for half of worldwide malaria infections. One option for reducing malaria is genetic manipulation of the vector. By creating transgenic mosquitoes incapable of spreading the malaria pathogen, the human-mosquito-human cycle of infection may be interrupted.

Conceptual runoff models – fiction or representation of reality?

The South Portuguese Zone (SPZ), which host world-class massive sulphide deposits, forms the southern fold-and-thrust belt of the Iberian Variscan orogeny. This thesis focuses on seismic-reflection and seismic-refraction processing efforts on a subset of the IBERSEIS deep seismic-reflection data set aiming at resolving the SPZ upper crust in high resolution.

A low-power second-order sampling receiver for Bluetooth

The main goal of this thesis is to investigate the feasibility of a quadrature radio frequency receiver front-end using a second-order sampling topology in CMOS. Second-order sampling combines subsampling with a non-uniform sampling scheme. This non-uniform sampling scheme comprises of two uniform sampling streams with a small time delay between both streams, which allows the generation of an I and Q channel.

Kinematics and Deformation History of the Cross Lake Greenstone Belt

Greenstone belts are a common feature of Archean terrains. However, the tectonic environment for Archean earth remains in hot debate: did vertical or horizontal crustal movement dominate the Archean Eon? Small-scale structural analysis is applied to a late Archean greenstone belt in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield in order to test the two end member hypotheses.

Methods and Applications in Comparative Bacterial Genomics

Comparative reports of bacterial genomics, now counting in the 100s, produce enormous amounts of information. To be able to support an organized and successful strategy to genomic analyses, a database powered program with graphic visualization of genomic qualities was created – GenComp. The application was employed on studies of obligate intracellular bacteria.
