In this report parameters for the design of a source of energetic neutral atoms, ENAs are suggested. The source is designed to be able to calibrate satellite-borne ENA measuring instruments. It is based upon the sputtering effect, using a 10 keV Ar+ ion beam as input to generate a well defined atomic beam in the energy range of 10 – 200 eV with the size of one square centimeter. The flux is approximately 0.06 – 80 atoms per second and square centimeter, depending on the material in use. The properties of the atomic beam are controlled by a velocity selecting mechanism based on mechanical ultra fast shutters, being able to produce a DeltaE/E lower than 10%. The atomic species is decided by the type of sputtering target, Fe being the heaviest possible element to use. The source is adapted to the existing calibration facilities of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics at Kiruna.
